Barry K. Kindle, my cousin of Elkhart, Indiana, died in Winter Haven, Florida on Tuesday of heart failure. He was an engaging optimist who certainly knew how to embrace life! In his final years, he managed staff at Sea World in Florida and enjoyed a happy and fulfilling marriage to Lee Ann Kindle. Our families (the Kindles, the Culveyhouses, the Russos, the Riefs, and the Rouches) shall always remember him as a brave soul who refused to bow to handicap or disability.
I always try to match classical works with current events in my life, and for the passing of Barry Kindle, I reflect on an elegy by the British composer Herbert Howells called Threnody. It is a deep but beautiful work for cello and orchestra, and Howells composed this in memory of his lost son.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Barry K. Kindle, 36, of Winter Haven, Fla., died of heart failure Tuesday (April 26, 2005) in Winter Haven.
He was born Aug. 26, 1968, in Elkhart.
Surviving are his wife, Lee Ann Kindle; one daughter, Celine Kindle of Winter Haven; one stepson, Billy Rice of Winter Haven; one sister, Katrina Russo of Goshen; and his father and stepmother, Jack L. and Marion Kindle of Winter Garden.
Friends may call one hour before the 3 p.m. Friday service at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Winter Haven.
Mr. Kindle moved to the Winter Haven area in 1988 from Elkhart. He worked as a supervisor at Sea World of Orlando.
